As we celebrate World Mental Health Day and look to raise awareness about mental health, we should remember that mental health starts with ourselves. We can’t help others to the extent that we would like if we are struggling ourselves.
Here are some tips for boosting your mental health.
Invest in quality relationships. The longest in-depth study of physical and mental well-being among adults found that satisfaction in relationships, particularly in marriages, was the best predictor of a happy and healthy life.
Try coloring. Coloring is a healthy way to relieve stress. It calms the brain and helps your body relax. This can improve sleep and fatigue while decreasing body aches, heart rate, respiration, and feelings of depression and anxiety.
Embrace salmon, flaxseeds, and walnuts – foods high in 0mega-3 fatty acids. They’ve been shown to help combat depression.
Adopt a pet or volunteer at an animal shelter. Here are 5 ways pets help with stress and mental health.
Are you filled with resentment and anger? Practice forgiveness. When forgiveness is taught, practiced, and achieved, the result is better mental and overall well-being.
Read stories of recovery and know that you are not alone. And share your personal experience with mental illness or recovery.
